The first time I saw a friend tweet about For The Twill of It, the star of essie’s Fall 2013 color collection, I completely flipped my lid. It’s no wonder that the fall collection also shares the same name, since it is the most unique shade in the collection by far.
The collection was inspired by the colors of lush cashmere, rich twill, and luxe lace fabrics that we turn to during every fall season. “I love the idea of creating polish that’s like the proverbial boyriend sweater – in this case, a blazer borrowed from the boys” brand founder and Global Creative Director Essie Weingarten said.
Colors mention reference the shades in the above photo from left to right. Here’s the breakdown:
Cashmere Bathrobe: Described as a ‘true flannel gray’, this colors reminds me of a deep grey sweater that I owned from Gap in high school. I really loved that thing! It also reminds me of older asphalt that has faded from black to a deep grey in the sun. It also has flecks of silver glitter running throughout.
Afterschool Boy Blazer: A beautiful, deep navy cream that reminds me of power suits and those who wear them. The blue is so dark that it could be mistaken for black in certain lighting, but has a softer and more flattering effect on the skin.
Twin Sweater Set: If Dita Von Teese were a red nail polish, this would be the one. essie’s description as a ‘vibrant crimson red’ hit it right on the head.
The Lace Is On: In person, this rich fuchsia looks a bit two dimensional with the tonal glitter. In photos (above and below) it springs alive. Listed as a ‘jewel-toned pearlescent fuchsia’, I think it’s a great choice for those who have a tough time leaving pink colors to the spring and summer months.
For The Twill Of It: The shining jewel of the collection and quite possibly my favorite color of the fall season thus far. It looks like a oil slick that met a craftsman jeweler who developed the most magical of effects. If you are able to still get your hands on it, you won’t regret it. Interestingly enough, the official description is a ‘compelling with maple with reflective olive shimmer’. However you describe it, it’s gorgeous.
Vested Interest: This could be the sleeper of the collection. It reminds me of a similar green to a couple of fall seasons ago, but more cool toned. It plays into the military trend that will be popular for fall, but the cooler tones keep it feeling fresh and gives a more flattering effect to some skintones. The ‘cool grey teal’ description is accurate, though I do feel like it has a mossy undertone as well.
