Growing up in the 90s was a tough time for me. I was already 6′ tall, so you know my pants were always too short, and living in rural Arkansas (like super racist, conservative rural Arkansas). What you wore didn’t matter as much as what church you attended & what your dad did for a living. Since I didn’t have the qualifications to satisfy the masses, style might have saved me, except for the fact that I was 6′ tall and a size 12 with size 11 feet. Y’all, I was screwed and there was nothing in the dELiA*s or Alloy catalogs that could save me.
Now that the world has evolved to be a bit more accommodating of bodies like mine (we’re nowhere close to where we should be, but at least I can find ripped denim), the 90s resurgence is everything I could have hoped for as underexpressed teen. Now I can wear a denim vest with all my favorite pins, chokers, and sheer shirts with my bra showing without the cumbersome social mores holding me back. Being an adult doesn’t always suck.
