Life’s Little Luxuries: Do You Design Your Own Life?

If you look closely, you’ll likely notice that the great creatives – think Tom Ford, Betsey Johnson, DVF, Rachel Zoe, and Jonathan Adler to name a few – have established a unique design aesthetic that runs through every element of their life. Thanks to the voyeuristic nature of our society (and the internet, natch) we’re blessed with sites like StyleLikeU that allow us to get a sneak peek (albeit an edited version) into these very personal spaces.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed a fundamental shift in the way that I think about money. Perhaps it’s a generational change, however the conservative Arkansas in me never would have shelled out for a Chanel handbag. In fact, she would have likely carried a fake and hoped that no one called her out (seriously, the secret shame is intense). Maybe it’s a sign of maturity, but every time I make a purchase, down to the coffee mug I desperately cling to in the morning, I think how it fits into my vision of my life. Would it look out of place in a photo of my desk?

Taking inspiration from many of the creative geniuses that I named above, I think about the impact my potential purchase might make within my apartment, my wardrobe or my every day life. For me, finding the balance between price, functionality and appearance is a struggle. For example, when you pack for a vacation, do you pick a theme for your daily outfits and build upon that? Might one of your goals be to have matching luggage?

Granted, it’s much easier to make these decisions when money is no object, but I’m so curious about the approach you take when adding a new piece to your life. What is your thought process?

Fashion Flash: Betsey Johnson Fall/Winter 2011 Accessories Preview

It’s no secret that I’ve been a long-time fan of Betsey Johnson. From her silly cartwheels to rhinestone necklaces that spell “Ride Me“, what’s not to love? Naturally, when I was invited to view the fall accessories collection at the Gramercy Park Hotel, I accepted.

For Fall/Winter 2011, Betsey has a few surprises in store. It was nice to see all the accessories together, telling a cohesive story of glitter, bows, animal prints and embellishments. The collection ranges from footwear to jewelry, belts, eyewear (both sunglasses and optical), as well as scarves and handbags. If Betsey’s collection is any indication, we’ll continue to rock platform pumps, animal prints and oxfords well through fall.

Fashion Week On The Plus Side: Outfit of the Day 9/13

To be completely honest, the 13th was one heck of a day – although it was a Monday, it definitely felt like Friday the 13th. I started the morning late (my Fashion Flu was raging in full force) and missed a couple of appointments at W Tempest and Wes Gordon (so sorry!). I made it in just in time to jet to Diesel Black Gold where I ran into Bryanboy & Andrew Mukamal. From there I raced back up to Lincoln Center for Monique Lhuillier backstage and then on to the show, Alexandre Herchovitz backstage, Betsey Johnson backstage, and finally ending at the KMart/Jaclyn Smith 25th Anniversary Celebration. By the time Lesley and I were finished at the KMart party, all we wanted to do was load up on carbs (a great excuse to use my newly coined phrase “Carbs, ahoy!”).

Unfortunately, it was too dark outside to find a great spot for my outfit photo, so we ended up ducking into the lobby of an apartment building for the shot above, while the man at the front desk was shouting at us. Oops – sorry!

Betsey Johnson’s Birthday Bash, As Seen By Kimberley Williamson

The one and only Betsey Johnson celebrated her 68th birthday with all the fanfare, tutus, vivid colors, and icing you would expect. Last week, her SoHo boutique was transformed into a Betsey princess palace, complete with balloons, a dj, delicious treats, a pink stretch Mini Cooper, and even Betsey look-a-likes. Photographer Kimberley Williamson was on hand to capture the excitement and passion of Betsey Johnson fans, in addition to a bit of frivolity.
