I casually joke that if guessing what MAC lipstick someone was wearing was an Olympic sport, I definitely win the gold. In an exciting twist of fate, I had the chance to someone who actually could win a real Olympic gold medal about her beauty favorites – Mikaela Shiffrin. Unless you follow alpine skiing, you may not have heard of her but that will likely all change when it’s time for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. She’s already causing quite a stir (The Daily Beast called her a ‘skiing prodigy’) and generating massive buzz with wins in major competitions. P&G took notice and named her a Pantene spokesperson, as well as included her in the Thank You, Mom program. Because of all this, I had a chance to chat with her about her beauty secrets and how she prepares for those gold medal moments.
What’s your beauty philosophy?
MS: Normally I keep it nice and simple. Have you heard that term ‘beauty base zero‘? It’s as if you were to get out of bed in the morning looking flawless and totally natural. Just really simple, highlighting your best features. That’s what I tend to go for when I’m skiing all day. In the morning, it’s become part of my routine to spend 15-30 minutes to make sure that I look my best.
What are the five things you pack in your bag for every competition?
MS: An extra hair tie because my hair is really thick, Pantene Flexible Hold Hairspray, CoverGirl Smoochies Lip Balm, an extra pair of shoes so I don’t have to spend the whole day in my ski boots, and my Oakley sunglasses.
What’s your secret to keeping your skin hydrated in the harsh winter conditions?
MS: I try, but I live in Vail, CO so it can be tough. I use the Olay Complete All Day Moisture Cream. I like it because it also has SPF 15.
Your lips are the most exposed to the elements when you ski. Any tips on taking care of them?
MS: I always try to cover my lips with something before I head out, but I don’t wear lipstick during workouts and training. My lips can get really chapped from the cold conditions and sunburned, so I use neutral colors in the CoverGirl Smoochies Lip Balms and LipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balms to even out the tone.
You spend your day in helmets and beanies. Any tips on avoiding hat hair?
MS: When I take my helmet off, I spray Pantene Flexible Hold Hairspray at my roots to create a bit of volume.
You’re causing quite the stir with your recent wins. What do you do to prepare for the medal ceremonies?
MS: I will play up my eyes with mascara and liner, but I really love styling hair. I even cut my brother’s hair! I carry my curling iron with me everywhere I go, so I add natural beach waves to my naturally curly and frizzy hair. I hope that everyone is looking at my hair – tell me that I have Pantene hair!
A huge thank you to Mikaela for taking the time to chat with me! If you want to know more about her, check out the video below of her and her mom from the P&G Thank You, Mom campaign. Best of luck at Sochi!
Kicking NYFW off for me was the perfect trifecta of beauty – Gregory Arlt for MAC Cosmetics, Danilo for Pantene and Keri Blair for MAC (nails). Although Desigual isn’t my style, the fact that this particular collection was designed by Christian Lacroix is pretty tough to ignore. It was the brand’s first show in New York (previously shown in Europe), so it was very clear that they were here to make a big impact with a high energy show designed to entice the buyers and build buzz, more so than any other show that I saw following.
To create the ‘effortless beauty with a pop of color look’, key artist Gregory Arlt used MAC’s Casual Color in Out For Fun on the lips and buffed into the cheeks. You might remember this multitasking product from a few seasons ago, but it will be back in new shades for SS2014. To create this look now, try MAC’s Neon Orange lipstick.
A bit of Cream Colour Base in Hush and Pearl was used to highlight the high points of the face on top of Face and Body Foundation.
You might know key artist Gregory Arlt’s work on his celebrity clients like Gwen Stefani, Dita Von Teese, Minnie Driver, and Michelle Trachtenberg. He’s also one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Find him on Twitter & Instagram (DO IT).
The nail look was created by Keri Blair, who you might also recognize as one of the creative powerhouses backstage for MAC. A twist on the classic French manicure, the dot of color was placed at the tip to look like it had almost “popped” onto the nail. To create the look, she used MAC polishes in Steamy, Fiestaware, and Impassioned.
For more of Keri’s amazing work, find her on Twitter and Instagram.
For the hair, Danilo created a look that was about the undone elegance. To prep the hair, he used AquaLight Weightless Conditioning Shake (one of his all-time favorite products) for detangling and conditioning. For texture, he applied Pantene Ultimate 10 BB Cream and polished the hair with Advanced Keratin Repair Keragloss Oil Mist before parting the hair down the center and pulling into a low ponytail with a round elastic. Then he folded the ponytail under and half wrapped the ends around the elastic, securing the ends with crisscrossed bobby pins.

Am I the only one who has become endlessly fascinated with beauty empties videos on YouTube? I’ve always wondered if I was the only one who felt really, really proud every time I finish an entire product. Since it’s my job to try out beauty products, making it through an entire product can either take a long time or never happen at all. Inspired by my friend Maree‘s empties post, I’m going to review my trash for you. Exciting, huh?
Pond’s Luminous Clean Towelettes, TRESemme Platinum Strength Deep Conditioning Treatment, Pantene Color Nourishing Treatment, and First Aid Beauty Shave Cream
From L to R:
Pond’s Luminous Clean Makeup Removing Towelettes: These makeup wipes are Holy Gail status. Even though Caroline Hirons has said that wipes are for ‘fannies, festivals, and flights’, there are some nights that I absolutely cannot be bothered to remove my makeup. I’m too tired. Please forgive me. It only takes one of these towelettes to remove all of my makeup, no matter how much I wear. They smell fresh and soothing, but not overpowering, and are a heavily moistened wipe. I really cannot ask for much more than the perfection of this product. SO GOOD.
TRESemme Platinum Strength Deep Conditioning Treatment: As a part of the Platinum Strength line, TRESemme created this Deep Conditioning Treatment. It is designed to repair up to two years of damage and guard against future damage. Now I don’t know about all that, but I do know that my hair was mega damaged after a tragic at-home color experience and this helped to breathe new life into my battered locks.
Pantene Color Nourishing Treatment: Speaking of at-home hair color, if you’ve ever DIY’d your hair color, you’ll know that the accompanying conditioner is like a gift from the Gods and there’s never enough. Pantene created this Color Nourishing Treatment as the answer to your empty tube problems. I always have it on hand to keep my color fresh, no matter if was professionally done or a DIY job.
First Aid Beauty Shave Cream: The best way to describe the First Aid Beauty shave cream is with one word: decadent. It is a thick, luxurious formula that protects skin from harsh razor blades (even if you should have thrown them out three shaves ago). I would be hesitant to repurchase this only because of the price when compared to drugstore alternatives, but otherwise this is a really, really, really great product.
Dial Coconut Water Body Wash, Nivea Smooth Sensation Daily Lotion, Crest 3D White Toothpaste
Dial Coconut Water Body Wash: It seems like coconut water is everywhere these days, and often with good reason. It is known to be mega hydrating, and Dial claims that this is a first to market product. I loved the fresh scent of the coconut water & bamboo extract – it is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. It is subtle and refreshing, yet difficult to describe. Next time you’re in the drugstore, flip the top on a bottle. I bet you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Nivea Smooth Sensation Daily Lotion: I’ve already talked about how much I love this lotion, but it bears repeating. It smells fresh without really having much of a scent and is absorbed almost instantly while providing lasting moisture all day. So, so good! I already have two bottles on backup.
Crest 3D White Icy Cool Mint Toothpaste: I’m super particular about the brand and type of toothpaste that I use. Off brand or generic brand totally freaks me out, and the formula needs to get a little frothy but not too foamy or it will also freak me out. If there’s any part of my body that I am crazy particular about, this is one of them. I love the Crest 3D White range because it has that perfect balance of an effective formula, decent taste, and doesn’t do anything other than what I expect it to do. While I don’t feel like it was whitened my teeth in any remarkable way, it has definitely kept my teeth from succumbing to my 3 cups of coffee a day addiction. It can be tough to select from all the 3D White options in store – there are so many choices – but IMO you can’t go wrong with any of formulas.

Beyonce’s ponytail tornado is clearly my hair flipping inspiration. (gif source)
I’m really excited for this year’s MTV Movie Awards. My imaginary bff, Rebel Wilson, is hosting AND she somehow convinced MTV that it was an excellent idea to have Channing Tatum feel her up in the promos. She’s truly living my best life.My friends at Pantene want you to flip out for their #HairFlipOff challenge centered around this year’s MTV Movie Awards. If you think that you can flip it better than Beyonce (and I really
want to see you try), submit your videos to @Pantene on Vine using the hashtag #HairFlipOff. They will select one winner to have their video made into a GIF and shared on the Pantene Twitter feed
during the Movie Awards (this Sunday, April 14). Submissions are open now through the awards show.
I recorded one earlier this week in case you’re looking for a little inspiration, or check out these flipping good ones from Eye4Style and This That Beauty. Pantene also immortalized my flip in this snazzy #HairFlipOff GIF:
ot into flipping your hair? No problem. During the MTV Movie Awards, Pantene will be giving away free products to followers
who retweet or favorite the brand’s tweets throughout the show. They have great tweets, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a few that you like. I’ll also be joining in on the fun during the show, sharing my favorite hair looks of the night. Also, please expect effusive tweets about how amazing Rebel Wilson is.If you enter the #HairFlipOff, please let me know. I’d love to see your Vine entry!
Pantene sponsored the creation of this post, but all the sass and Rebel Wilson love is mine!
Last week, I was floating on cloud nine. Why, you might be wondering? My friends at Pantene had the idea to invite me and a friend to spend the night at the Dream Downtown as part of the launch for their new overnight treatment, Overnight Miracle Repair Serum. I asked my friend Alia to come along and we treated it like the best slumber party we never had when we were 12. Candy in bed, bad tv (E!, Bravo, and MTV only), plus spa treatments (see Alia’s picture of me imagining how Beyonce gets her in-room pedicures), a three course dinner, and a few cocktails. We were s-p-o-i-l-e-d.
Needless to say, I was super curious about the treatment after the team from Pantene went to such trouble. Overnight Miracle is designed as an addition to the Repair and Protect line and intended to be used in conjunction with the shampoo and conditioner. As part of this three step system, Pantene claims that it can repair up to six months of visible damage in one use using the formula’s attraction to the most damaged areas of your hair. Crazy, right?
Since Pantene is all about #beautysleep, they placed super cute tips on how to make the most from your sleep cycle around the room. My favorite one really spooked me:
- Try to avoid burying your face in your pillow by sleeping on your back. Side, and especially stomach sleeping, can leave creases in your face that become more permenent as we age.
I haven’t had my hair cut in over a year (I know, I know) because I’m really focused on growing it out, but as a result my ends are split and damaged. The Overnight Miracle helped to smooth out the shaft and especially the ends of my hair and didn’t leave it feeling heavy or limp. Check out this Instagram from the next morning for proof!
If you want to ask the experts about how Overnight Miracle can achieve such unbelievable results, log onto to Twitter on Tuesday, April 9th from 2-3pm to chat with Danilo, Pantene’s Global Ambassador and Celebrity Stylist (also known as Gwen Stefani’s mane man) and sleep expert Dr. Lisa Shives for a Twitter chat using the hashtag #beautysleep.
